Aftermarket vs Factory Remote Start: What’s the Difference?

Technician installing a vehicle security system in a car

Plenty of cars sold in the last decade came with remote start built into the key fob. If yours did, you already know its one limitation, because you have walked halfway across a parking lot pressing the button and waiting to hear the engine.

Here is what actually separates the two, and when replacing or extending a factory system is worth the money.

Range is the real difference

Factory remote start typically reaches 50 to 100 feet. That is enough to start the car from your front window and not enough to start it from your desk, from inside a store, or from an apartment above the second floor.

Aftermarket systems come in three ranges:

  • One-way, a few hundred feet. Fine for a driveway you can see.
  • Two-way, up to a mile in open conditions. The remote confirms the car actually started.
  • Cellular, no range limit. Start it from a phone app from anywhere with signal.

If your complaint about factory remote start is that you have to be near the car, that is the whole problem and any of the three fixes it.

Confirmation is the second difference

Factory systems are almost all one-way. You press the button and hope. If the car did not start, because the hood was open or a door was unlocked or the system timed out, you find out when you get there.

A two-way remote tells you. Most show it on a small screen or sound a tone. In January, from inside a warm building, that is worth more than it sounds.

Run time and restarts

Factory systems usually run for 10 to 15 minutes and allow one restart before requiring the key. Aftermarket systems are configurable, including run time and number of restarts.

For most people the default is fine. For anyone who parks somewhere they cannot easily return to, the flexibility matters.

Do I replace the factory system or add to it?

Often neither. In many vehicles we can fit a long-range module that works alongside the factory system rather than replacing it, so your original key fob keeps doing what it always did and you gain the range.

Whether that is possible depends on the vehicle. Call with the year, make and model and we will tell you which of the three applies to yours: extend the factory system with an add-on module, fit a standalone system that integrates with your locks and lights, or fit a standalone system where integration is not practical.

Does any of this void my warranty?

No. A properly installed remote start does not void a manufacturer warranty. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a dealer cannot void your warranty over an aftermarket part unless that part caused the failure.

What matters is the quality of the install, which is the argument for having it done by a shop that has been doing it since 2002 rather than by whoever quoted cheapest. A badly wired remote start is exactly the kind of thing that does cause failures.

So is it worth it?

If you have factory remote start and you are happy standing within sight of the car, no. Keep what you have.

If you have ever walked out of work to a cold car because you could not reach it from your desk, then yes, and the upgrade is usually smaller than people expect because we are adding range rather than rebuilding the system.
