STYLE, COMFORT & PROTECTION
Window tint is more than just a cosmetic upgrade — it provides real benefits that improve your driving experience, comfort, and vehicle protection.
Stereo City offers professional window tint installation using premium-quality films designed to reduce heat, block harmful UV rays, minimize glare, improve privacy, and give your vehicle a sleek modern appearance.
Wisconsin law limits how dark the film on some windows can be, and the rules are different for the front side windows than for the rear glass, and different again for SUVs and vans. Bring your vehicle in and we will walk you through the shades that are legal for it, so you get the look you want without a ticket.
Professional window tint can help:
Reduce Interior Heat

Protect Vehicle Interior

Help Keep Your Vehicle Cooler
Our team can help you understand the differences between each film percentage and choose the best option for your vehicle, visibility preferences, and style goals.
Every tint installation is completed with precision and attention to detail to ensure a clean, professional, bubble-free finish.
Not every shade below is street legal in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin requires at least 50% VLT on front side windows and at least 35% on the rear side windows and rear window. Of the shades listed here, only 35% and 50% meet those limits on a passenger vehicle — the darker options are for show vehicles and off-road use. We will tell you what is legal for your car before we fit anything. Full details in Wisconsin Window Tint Laws further down this page.

Wisconsin Window Tint Laws: What Is Legal
Wisconsin sets a minimum on how much light has to get through your windows, and it is stricter up front than in the back. The limits below come from Wisconsin Administrative Code Trans 305.32 and apply to passenger vehicles.
- Front side windows — 50% VLT minimum. This is the one people get ticketed for. Anything darker than 50% on your front doors is not legal without a medical exemption.
- Rear side windows and rear window — 35% VLT minimum.
- Windshield — tint only above the AS-1 line, the marked strip at the top of the glass.
- No reflective or mirrored film on any window.
- If your rear window is tinted below 60%, your vehicle needs working outside mirrors on both sides.
Wisconsin also allows a medical exemption down to 35% on the front side windows with certification from your physician. Bring the paperwork with you and we will install to that spec.
Lower percentages mean darker film, so a 5% limo tint is well past what Wisconsin permits on any window of a passenger car. We will tell you that before you pay rather than after, and fit the darkest shade the law does allow.
When you come in we will walk you through which shade is legal for each window on your specific vehicle, because factory glass is already tinted on some models and that changes the final reading. Call (262) 833-0225 and we will talk it through.
The figures above reflect Wisconsin law as of September 2026 and are provided for general information. Verify current requirements with the Wisconsin DOT.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 20% tint legal in Wisconsin?
No. Wisconsin requires at least 50% VLT on front side windows and at least 35% on the rear side windows and rear window. 20% film is darker than both limits, so it is not legal on any window of a passenger vehicle. The darkest shade you can legally run in Wisconsin is 35%, and only in the rear.
What is the darkest legal tint in Wisconsin?
35% on the rear side windows and the rear window, and 50% on the front side windows. Officers allow a 3% measurement tolerance, but that is margin for the meter, not an extra 3% of darkness to install.
Is there a medical exemption for window tint in Wisconsin?
Yes. With certification from a physician or other qualifying practitioner, your front side windows can go to 35% instead of 50%. Bring the documentation to your appointment.
How long does window tinting take?
A standard car takes two to three hours. SUVs and trucks with more glass, or vehicles that need old film removed first, take longer. Removal of failing factory or aftermarket tint is charged separately because it is slow work.
How long before I can roll my windows down?
Three to five days in warm weather, longer when it is cold. The film needs to cure and bond to the glass. Roll a window down too early and you can peel the edge of the film. We will tell you exactly how long when you pick the car up.
Why does my new tint look hazy or bubbly?
That is normal for the first week or two. Moisture gets trapped between the film and the glass during installation and evaporates out as it cures. Cold weather slows it down. If it is still hazy after a few weeks, bring it back to us.
Does window tint actually reduce heat?
Yes, and ceramic film considerably more than dyed film of the same darkness. Heat rejection comes from infrared blocking, not from how dark the film looks, which is why a legal 50% ceramic can outperform a much darker dyed film on a hot day.
Can you remove my old tint?
Yes. Old film that has turned purple or started bubbling can be removed and replaced. It is labour-intensive, especially on rear windows with defroster lines, which have to be worked carefully so the elements are not damaged. We quote removal separately.
Do you tint the windshield?
Only above the AS-1 line, the marked strip at the top of the glass, which is what Wisconsin permits. We do not tint the main windshield area.
