How to Choose a Car Subwoofer

Most people arrive at this decision having read a spec sheet and come away more confused than they started. Peak wattage, RMS, sealed versus ported — none of it answers the actual question, which is what will sound good in my car, with my music, at the volume I actually listen at.

Here is how we talk it through in the shop.

Start with what is wrong now, not with specs

Two complaints send people looking for a subwoofer, and they need different answers.

It sounds thin. You are missing low end entirely. Almost any properly installed subwoofer fixes this, and you do not need a big one.

It distorts when I turn it up. You are asking factory speakers to do something they physically cannot. A subwoofer takes the low frequencies off them, which cleans up everything else as a side effect. This is the upgrade people are most surprised by, because the midrange gets better even though you did not change the midrange.

If it is the second one, a subwoofer plus an amplifier will do more for you than replacing every speaker in the car.

Sealed or ported

This is the decision that actually changes how it sounds.

Sealed boxes are smaller, tighter and more accurate. Bass stops when the note stops. If you listen to rock, country, jazz, acoustic or anything where you want the bass line to be a line rather than a rumble, sealed is usually right.

Ported boxes are larger and louder for the same power, with more emphasis around the port tuning frequency. If you listen to hip hop, EDM or anything built on sustained low bass, ported gives you more of what you are after.

Neither is better. A ported box in a car that mostly plays acoustic music sounds bloated. A sealed box for someone who wants the mirrors shaking sounds disappointing.

Size matters less than people think

A 10-inch and a 12-inch, properly powered and in the right enclosure, are closer than the numbers suggest. The 12 moves more air and goes a little lower. The 10 is tighter and takes less trunk space.

What actually decides it is usually how much room you are willing to give up. A single 10 in a sealed box under a truck rear seat is invisible. Two 12s in a ported box take most of a car trunk. Both can sound excellent.

The amplifier is not optional

This is where most budget builds go wrong. A subwoofer rated at 500W RMS fed by 150W sounds worse than a 300W subwoofer fed properly — and underpowering is what actually kills subwoofers, because a clipping amplifier sends a distorted signal that cooks the voice coil.

Match the amplifier RMS output to the subwoofer RMS rating. Ignore peak and max numbers entirely; they are marketing. If the budget will not stretch to both, buy a smaller subwoofer and power it correctly rather than a bigger one you cannot drive.

The install is half the result

The same subwoofer in the same box sounds different depending on how it is fitted. Enclosure volume has to match the driver. Wiring has to be the right gauge for the current. The amplifier needs a proper ground. And the whole thing needs tuning — gain, crossover and phase set against the rest of the system, not guessed.

Sound deadening in the trunk or doors is the cheap upgrade nobody asks for and everybody notices, because a panel that rattles at 50Hz ruins bass no matter what is producing it.
